Marvel – 1, DC – 0

In the unending battle to be the top dog, DC unleashes its secret weapon, the Blackest Night story arc. And to promote it, they came up with this gimmick: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=23702 Basically, DC was giving out free Lantern Rings with their lower tier Blackest Night titles like Doom Patrol. FREE Lantern Rings are the closest thing to actually swearing the oath. So you can imagine the geekgasm that took place. Drooling aside, retailers stocked up on the books so they can get the rings. The geeks were happy for a time but they wanted more. So the retailers sold the rings at a $1.99 each. Naturally the geeks brought the rings and started pointing it at each other together with their make-believe power up sounds.

Purchased rings meant unpurchased comics.

With the geeks now happy, the retailers where left with books that’s hard to sell. Then Marvel comes to the rescue: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=24406 Marvel offered retailers a very rare variant Siege book. At what cost? 50 unsold DC books off the shelf and into the mighty Marvel trash bin…

That ladies and gentlemen is marketing with balls. I don’t know if it will work or what but that is one heck of a move. They even came up with this:
